Works to a limited degree

Got mine at Costco for $36 (couldn't pass it up at that price). I've been wanting a clothes steamer for a while, since I used one at a friend's house about 5 years ago (not this brand). I saw a website review on a sharper image model that had a trigger to allow the steam to emit from the nozzle which looked good. Unfortunately the one I got from Costco labeled "Professional Garment Steamer" did not have a trigger to emit the steam, and simply worked on a thermostat which boiled the water in a chamber at the base until the thermostat reached it's maximum temperature, and then shut off until it cooled off enough for the heater to turn on again. Basically it is a steamer that works for 30 seconds or so, then shuts off for 30 seconds or so, and then turns back on again. So, if you don't mind doing your steaming 30 seconds at a time it works ok at best. My experience was that it didn't really put out enough heat to really get the wrinkles completely out like an iron. My Costco brand "Kirkland wrinkle free" 100% cotton shirt that I steamed as a test article only looked less wrinkled than it was, but by no means was it unwrinkled (like an iron). I don't think this steamer would save any time steaming your clothes in lieu of ironing due to it's on/off duty cycle. I should have guessed that it was an inferior product since it says "Professional" on the box (no prefessional would ever use this product). As with any product, if they have to tell you it's "professional" you can be assured that it is not.In defense of this product I must say that it seemed somewhat more stout than other steamers that I've seen at Costco which appeared flimsy, and therefore I didn't buy them.In conclusion, Costco is a great place to shop, because if you buy some crappy product there, they will always take it back, which I will do tomorrow. I won't fork out the $300 to get a real steamer that really works because you can get a lot of shirts laundered at the cleaners for $300, and all I have to do is drop them off and pick them up (which is still a pain).Hope this review was beneficial.

Great Product

Purchased this item at Costco for $50. It works fantastic and looks great. It holds a good amount of water, heats up quickly and is very functional with it's accessories. The instructions say to fill it with tap water, but that's kind of stupid, especially if your water is hard; you should always use distilled water in products like these (doesn't mold or build up gunk). My whole family wants to go out and get one of these now. My clothes look a lot better than if they had been ironed, and it's faster!

Not really impressed

To be fair - I am somewhat a perfectionist and use my heavy steam iron with spray starch for sharp creases in my shirts and pants. Having said that, I'm not really impressed with this steamer. It's just okay. I even sprayed starch on my shirt before I steamed it thinking that might work. I was expecting what you get back from the cleaners as this boasts that you can save lots of money on dry cleaning. I don't see this as an alternative to dry cleaning with a press and starch. I bought it at Costco for $35.00, so I guess you get what you pay for. I'm probably going to take this machine back. If you are OCD about your clothing, this probably isn't for you.

Perfect!

I was convinced that the extra pads I ordered would arrive the wrong size or of crappy quality. There seems to be a million different models of the Shark Steam Cleaner out there now. I bought mine at Costco and of course now there's 6 different ones that they sell too. Well, for once, I was WRONG!! The quality was the same as those that originally came with my Shark steam cleaner, and they fit PERFECTLY!! These were cheaper to purchase on Amazon than through the Shark company and I am thrilled with them after 6 uses each. Why spend your money if you dont have to!

These pads are just as good as the "Shark" ones but at a way better price. I read the reviews before I purchased these knock off ones and I would swear that the employee's from the "Shark Company" get on there to degrade them. If you don't find these to work the same or fit properly as some may say...then maybe your a knuckle head and have no clue what steam mop you own.The pads fit perfectly, clean the same and got shipped fast. Another great purchase from AMAZON, I will be ordring more in the future!

Good performance so far

I work in the garment industry and have been using Rowenta irons (both at work and at home) for over 15 years. The best advice I can give anyone is that if you are going to spend the money for the Rowenta brand name, then make sure that the model you are buying says "MADE IN GERMANY". At one time all Rowenta irons were made in Germany, however several years ago as a cost cutting move, the company farmed out many of its lower price models to China. The difference in quality between the models made in Germany and China is quite dramatic. Every Rowenta German model I have owned or worked with has been mostly reliable, and each provided steady long term use. On the other hand, the lower priced models made in China are known to leak (both clear and brown water), drip, have uneven steam, and only last for a short time. I offer this not only as my own opinion; this is the general consensus among my industry colleagues as well.My previous Rowenta home model just died after 10 years of service. After much research and comparison, I decided on this Rowenta Pro Maser DW-8080 model as a replacement. I have been using it for three weeks and so far am very happy with the purchase.PROS: Great steam power (lots of it!)....even on the medium steam setting it produces enough for getting out wrinkles on linen and cotton. The iron gets out wrinkles in one pass, where my old iron may have taken two or three passes. The pointed nose makes it easy to get into corners. The iron uses regular tap water (unfiltered, straight out of the tap) and comes with a plastic pouring cup which is handy for filling. I have not experienced any dripping or leaking of any kind. The self-clean feature really works, it lets out a BLAST of steam and water that will flush out any particles.CONS: Iron is a bit on the heavy side...it is substantial in your hand. The hand grip seems a bit short in length, and is positioned more towards the back of the unit, which makes the iron feel a bit front-long as you steer it around. The hinged lid covering the water fill hole has to be snapped shut; it requires a pretty good push to get it to snap (though that could be because the unit is new).Despite the few flaws, I think that the Rowenta Pro Master is a great iron for home use.UPDATE 12/2010: I have been using this iron for nearly 11 months now and it is still performing as beautifully as day one. Highly recommend.UPDATE 2/2013: Still going strong! My only minor complaint is that despite the anti-calc feature the iron has a bit of calcium build up inside after 3 years. The little flakes of build up do come out with the self-clean feature, but I have to self-clean more often as it gets older. Can't really fault the iron for this as mineral deposits are a fact of life when an appliance uses hot water. I also occasionally polish up the soleplate with the Rowenta Soleplate Cleaner Kit to keep it gliding smoothly. Other than that it's still performing as well as they day I bought it.

Extremely thorough review

After spending about 4-5 days (pathetic, I know.....but I'm very thorough) researching irons a few years back (and getting the Black & Decker D2020, which I was very satisfied with), I now needed a new one. Fortunately, my previous research narrowed the playing field to B&D's and Rowenta's, so I was able to conclude my research much quicker this time. After going through each model that each company makes, and reading all reviews on the Amazon site for each model at least twice, and looking at comments at several other sites as well, I concluded the following:1. The B&D D2020 was a very unique iron in that the percentage of positive reviews it received compared to negative ones were astonishing....and all it cost was $35. Unfortunately, they discontinued the model several years back, and none of the new models even come close to the D2020. The newer models, (the D6000 series in particular) are bulkier, don't work nearly as well, and have a strange water filling position where you need to hold the hot iron while you fill it. Still, if you need a good iron and are only willing to pay $40, this is the iron you want.2. The Rowenta DW8080 is the best iron on the market today for $100 or less.3. There are a couple of issues like a. a similarly strange water filling position....which ended up not bothering me nearly as much as I originally thought it would b. The handle is rather thick for an iron. It didn't bother me in the slightest, but it may bother someone with tiny hands c. The cord is short, as others have mentioned, but if you have an outlet relatively close to the ironing board (as I'm sure most people do), it's a non-issue d. The iron needs constant, and I mean constant, refilling of water. This is directly related to the amount of steam and water spray you use, and I use a ton of it. I end up having to refill the water tank every 2 shirts. If you use starch instead of spray, or don't like steam, it may last like 4-5 shirts before needing a refill. e. Durability. I have only had the iron for about a month so it's too early to tell how long it may last, but several people complained that it died or leaked terribly after about 12-18 months. However, bear in mind that if the iron works fine for a few years, virtually noone will come back to write a review saying that it's a good iron that lasted a long time. You will generally only hear long-term feedback/complaints from those whose irons died early f. The spray button is on the right of the steam surge button, which is a bit strange, but its not that hard to get used to. g. The iron is not digital, and the transition from a digital iron to this is a bit strange as you feel you are taking a "step-down", even though, in all likelihhod, it's a better iron than your previous one.4. If you want the best possible product after ironing and are not concerned with any of the above issues, this is the iron you want to get, hands down. The shirts look amazing, better than they would look after the dry cleaners, and as someone who frequently re-irons shirts after they come back from the cleaners, I would know. The ironing itself is very enjoyable with the DW8080 as the steam is so powerful that you see the burst coming through the other side of the ironing board, and it looks a bit like the Broadway shows where the floor is covered in steam or fog. It's a powerful machine and very enjoyable to operate. I thought the B&D D2020 had a lot of steam, but this has significantly more and the clothing come out much, much better than they did with the B&D.5. Unless the price of the DW9080 comes down, I don't think their claims of "30% more steam" justify the 30% increase in price. I am very happy with the DW8080 and believe that it produces as much steam as anyone could ever want. Similarly, there are many complaints with the cheaper Rowenta models made in China. I would avoid those and go with this model instead.Hope you enjoyed the review!

Two irons in a row defective

This iron is good and sturdy. It is a bit on the heavy side, but that is okay. It has a "burst of steam" feature, and a sprayer (which I've not used yet). The burst of steam can be used in the vertical position. The sole shape is concave before the tip, which lets you get into small places. There is a control that lets you adjust the amount of steam you get. The iron has an auto-shutoff feature. There is a light that indicates when it is heating. (Some other reviewer said it was hard to know when it is warmed up. Just wait for this light to go out, and it is warm.) This light is near the base of the handle and is a bit hard to see. It is only visible from the left side, an inconvenience for left-handed users. There is a self-cleaning feature. I've not yet used it.The iron consumes 1700 watts, which comes to 14.2 amps. That is close to the 15 amp limit of most household circuits in America. So you had better not have this plugged into the same circuit as anything that consumes much power (say a washing machine).The instructions are very restrictive about the kind of water that can be used. All of the following are not allowed: water from clothes dryers, scented water, softened water, water from refrigerators, batteries, or air conditioners, pure distilled water, per demineralized water (I assume this is another name for de-ionized water), rain water, boiled water, filtered water, bottled water. If your water is hard (mine is quite hard---16 grains per gallon) you are advised to mix tap water and distilled or demineralized water 50-50. I understand some of that; you don't want any serious foreign gunk in the water and you need some metal ions to avoid pitting of the metal parts of the iron. But why can't I mix tap water and softened water? And why the prohibition on boiled, filtered, or bottled water?My biggest complaint is this: The steam adjustment has 8 positions. As you move to more flow you seem to be working against a spring. There are detents at the 8 positions that are supposed to make it stay put. But it absolutely won't say in the highest flow position at all. Positions 4, 5, 6, and 7 are not stable; after a minute of ironing, the lever always seems to have popped down to position 3, which provides too little flow for my ironing tasks. An iron that costs as much as this one does and touts "Made in Germany" should not have a function that does not work right!Another minor issue is that it is hard to see the water level. Also the behavior of the iron seems to vary some with water level. But given that you are always having to reset the steam flow control, it really doesn't matter.I haven't seen a T-Fal iron, but given that at least one model gets many 5-star reviews, Consumer Reports rates it the highly, and it is way cheaper, maybe you should check that one out before buying this one.===== ADDED 9/5/2010 =====I decided that for the high price I paid for for it, and it was "Made in Germany", I really deserved to have one where the steam control worked. So I took it back to where I bought it, and they traded it for a new one. That was a big mistake. The steam control on the new one worked perfectly but it spit water something terrible. Even with the temperature in the middle of the cotton-linen region it was bad. At higher steams settings if you held the iron in the air horizontally, it would spew gobs of liquid water. Even at low setting, it would spit out small amounts of liquid and make wet blotches on the garment being ironed. Yes, I could turn the steam off, and iron for a while until the wet spot dried up. But this was even worse that the first one.I returned the iron and got my money back.Two irons in a row defective; I'm lowering my rating from 4 stars to 1 star, since it looks like there are consistent problems, not just a rare minor defect.All I can say is that if you want to try a Rowenta, be sure you ask about return policies and keep your receipts.

A Different Beast!

Apparently, I am one of the few remaining individuals who feel the need for freshly ironed clothing. I've always used steam irons, Rowenta most recently, with consistently disappointing results. Over the years, I've increased my use of spray starch to make up for the power I've believed should have originated in the iron. But no more!After deciding I wasn't ready for a presser or a mangle for my clothing, and knowing I really didn't need to press that many tablecloths, I discovered a new genre: steam generating irons. And, after some significant research, I ordered this DeLonghi model.It is truly a different beast than anything I've ever used! What steam production!!! The temperature of the iron sole plate is controlled independently from the quantity of steam desired. Tap water is actually recommended for use. The iron, while substantial in heft, is not heavy. And the old-fashioned looking cork handle is soft, smooth and cool to the touch.But the bottom line is the job it does on my clothing and linen! While the ads say that this machine will cut your ironing time in half, I cannot say this is true.....mainly because I find myself taking the time to marvel over how each pass with the iron produces such a professional-looking surface! Really, the only thing that's been halved is my use of spray starch, which is an unforseen and welcome benefit!Am I happy with my new "beast?" You bet! Would I buy another? No way....I suspect this well-designed machine is going to last me a long, long time. But can I recommend one for you? Without reservation!

Stiromeglio Delonghi Ironing System

We just got this product and we love it! The iron generates really powerful steam that reduces time by half. The iron per se is really light, which helps as well.We used to spend no more than $50 for an iron that we would throw away after 1-2 years of frustration: heavy, not powerful (always check wattage before buying an iron!) and losing ability to deliver heat over time.Bottom line: if you like saving time and making ironing a less painful activity, definitively go for this product. Bought it at Amazon for $150 (using Kitchen & Housewares $25 coupon) minus discount from amazon visa. It comes with 3-year warranty. A must.

We read the reviews of the DeLonghi Stiromeglio Compact PRO 300 Ironing System with Pressurized Boiler - and noted that they were mainly positive- after many years of buying and being frustrated with Rowenta irons- we decided to upgrade to the DeLonghi. The iron and steam system work extremely well and deliver on high quality ironing. But we are returning it because in under one month the steam button/switch that activates the steaming is broken! We're trying again with a replacement and hope that the button/switch failure was a fluke- but to have such a good system with such a cheap button/switch is not just a design problem but business philosophy one as well- saving a couple of cents on a fundamental operating part invites problems.

Better than my German-made Rowenta! WOW!

I expected an iron by Singer to be...a lightweight. I WAS SOOOOO wrong! I have a 1400-watt German-made Rowenta iron that has been my standard for a long time but I was BLOWN AWAY by the Singer. 1700 watts makes a difference!The iron has a good, hefty feel. It has a digital readout that tells you the temp and type of fabric suitable for that amount of heat. It also suggests steam or not. It has a very quiet beep that indicates that the iron is up to temp. And it heats up FAST - less than a minute to the linen setting.And HOT! Oh baby. Ironed 100% linen in nothing flat, one pass with steam, no heavy pressing necessary. The soleplate is stainless steel and was very smooth. It has a nice point - easy to get the corners and edges - and QUICK.NO dribbling, spitting, sputtering. The water filling hole has a cover so you can't accidentally slop hot water all over your hands or project.The phone rang. I left the iron at the board, answered, and came back. It had shut itself off, but when I turned it back on it remember the setting I'd left it on. More linen followed.I ironed cotton. A breeze. Quilters, you would love this!I give it a hearty recommendation for occasional or heavy-duty ironing. You will not waste time PRESSING and waiting for results. It is SO hot that it does the job for you.Finally, even though I used a lot of steam the water didn't seem to go down very fast (compared to my Rowenta, which is a water hog).Thumbs up!

Perfect Iron!

LCDs are so inexpensive these days that they are now on every other device. The LCD on this iron makes it kind of "cool" while giving you quick information about this iron's temperature settings. It shows vertical bars, numbers, as well as text to display the 9 different temperature levels. Each of these nine temperature levels are for different types of garments::1. Acrylic2. Nylon3. Silk4. Polyester5. Poly-Cotton Blend6. Wool7. Cotton8. Jeans/Denim9. LinenNot only does the LCD provide information about the temperature setting but it also has three indicators that let you know the status of 1) Steam, 2) Anti-Scale and 3) Auto-Off features.Steam:Right under the LCD, it has two big buttons for steam: Left one for "Burst of Steam" and right one for "Cool Mist Spray". You can also use the "Burst of Steam" feature vertically if you are ironing clothes or suites that are hanging. The "Cool Mist Spray" simply sprays cold water from the front of the iron to your garment as you iron. The burst feature is great as it can really get those wrinkles out of those cotton shirts.Anti-Scale:There is also a feature called "Anti-Scale". The built-in Anti-Scale cartridge is designed to reduce the buildup of mineral substances in the water which occurs during steam ironing.Auto-Off:I think this iron has some great auto-off features. This is a safety feature that will turn off the iron when it's left unattended for more than 8 minutes in vertical (standing) position. If the iron is left on its soleplate or tipped over, it will shut off after 30 seconds with an audio beep to alert you. While it's shutting down, the LCD will flash the "Auto-Off" symbol. To "wake" the iron up after it has been automatically shut off, simply move or gently shake it. Within 60-seconds after you wake it, it will be ready to iron at the same temperature setting it was set to previously.Anti-Drip:This feature prevents dripping of water from the soleplate when it detects that the temperature is low.Although it's a great iron, as with most things, this is also MADE IN CHINA, unlike some Rowenta irons that are made in Germany.

I wanted to like this iron. I hate it. It dribbles water

I did a lot of research before choosing this iron. After all the time spent, I really wanted to like it!!The pros: Not too light, not too heavy. Digital controls. Comfortable handle. Not as comfortable as my now deceased B&D 2020 because the top of the handle is flat rather than rounded, but reasonably comfortable nonetheless. Nicely balanced. Good shot of steam feature. Glides easily. Warms up to or decreases heat to chosen fabric temperature quickly and indicates when chosen temperature has been reached.The cons: The iron dribbles water and leaks! I get random water spots on the clothes I am ironing then must take care not to scorch them. If I rest the iron on its heel and come back a few minutes later, there is water on the ironing board. Secondly, the steam function works when it wants to and doesn't work when it's not in the mood! One moment you are ironing along with great steam. Then on another part of the garment you are getting poor results only to realize that the iron has stopped steaming. Later it will start steaming again. It seems random. The cons far outweigh the pros and I hope that Amazon is going to accept a return even though the item is in fact opened and used. This is truly the worst iron I have ever used and I have lived long enough to have owned several!One other point. The iron has an 8 foot cord. Because of the particular location where I iron, this is an annoyance. My old B&D had a 10 food cord. When researching irons however, I did notice that currently even the top of the line B&D has only an 8 foot cord. A con, but tolerable.For the record - I did read the instructions and I did follow the necessary procedure for first use. Considering the fact that there are several good reviews, perhaps mine is a lemon and you will have better luck. I hate this iron.

A very expensive iron that might be worth it, even for guys

(An iron review from a GUY? Get over it: I was in the military.)This expensive little item can be thought of as Cordless Iron v2.0, with some real improvements. Unfortunately, Panasonic missed the sweet price point by a factor of two, but if that's not a problem for you, then this might be the best iron out there. It's heavy enough to be effective, yet light enough to be an all-day tool.It heats up INCREDIBLY fast, like from dead cold with a full reservoir, it's puffing steam and ready to work in one minute flat. I never understood why irons are iron-shaped, with one sharp end and an awkward flat end that gets caught on seams and pockets when naturally sliding backward. This one is double-ended, solving that problem and allowing for detailed ironing in both directions. (One commenter mentions getting one for quilting: I'll bet he's thrilled with it.) Panasonic claims it's "360 degree" and it is, up to a point: the curl on the edges of the soleplate allows you to effectively move sideways, even over fairly rough seams, but that probably won't feel natural to you, either. The fully-retractable cord on the base is a nice touch.One concern I had is that the stand for the iron is 95% plastic, with plastic rollers that contact the soleplate directly. I parked the iron on High for a long time (it cycles on and off, naturally). The plastic paid no attention. An iron mostly made out of "Plastics" would have been a punch-line back in 1967 when "The Graduate" was made, but is an actual selling point today.(This part exclusively for guys.) First, a quick sanity check: Are you thinking of buying this as a present for your sweetie? PLEASE understand that when she is asked why she ditched you, she'll summarize the entire relationship with: "He bought me an iron for my birthday."Ironing doesn't exactly come naturally to us, but I have several really nice shirts that I never wore because the collars turn into pretzels when washed. A good iron like this takes care of that problem in no time, but is actually so pleasant to use that the entire shirt ends up getting ironed, and then a few pairs of pants besides. I sheepishly admit that I did further research, discovered it's better to use a good spray starch like this one only on collars and cuffs; use spray "sizing" everywhere else.Very nice machine. Feed it an exclusive diet of distilled water, and enjoy.==================================================Now for he manual, which is actually useful. I've summarized the important details below, to save you from the usual endless lawyer-noise, like "NEVER IRON CLOTHES ON THE BODY." (No, I didn't make it up: lawyer-noise is impossible to satirize.)Two obvious buttons, marked well with icons: Extra Steam Blast, and Squirt Of Water. The manual says Extra Steam Blast only works reliably on High, but from my experience it also works fine on Low. Squirt of Water is extremely mist-like, even from cold, so spotting should never be a problem - some real engineering went into that little feature.One three-way switch, clearly icon-marked as No Steam, Steam, Extra Steam.Less obvious: The water reservoir detaches from the base. There's a little button on the front stem of the handle, allowing you to pull the reservoir and all its controls off. This allows you to fill the iron from a shallow sink, preheat the iron while filling the reservoir, or use the iron as a dry-iron with the water reservoir detached. (The manual doesn't mention that little weight-saving slant.)

The perfect iron for those of us who hate to iron

The cord that gets in the way, the water that sputters out when you were only trying for steam and the length of time most irons take to heat up and the amount of time it takes to actually do the ironing. This iron solves all of that. It heats super fast, there's no cord on the iron to worry about and it doesn't sputter. It doesn't even spit. It's well behaved, easy to use and does exactly what it's supposed to do, but with much less effort than any other iron I've ever used. Oh, and one other thing, I love that it doesn't have Teflon on the ironing plate. You know, that stuff that's supposed to keep stuff you burn from sticking but after a while always has built up gunk on it? This has a nice shiny stainless steel plate that glides smoothly over every type of material I've used it on.The other very cool thing about this iron is the shape of the bottom. It's not like the old fashioned irons with the flat bottom plate that moved forward but not backwards very easily. This truly moves in any direction which makes a huge difference in how quickly you finish ironing a garment and get back to fun stuff. And if you want to cheat, the vertical steam feature turns this thing into a steamer so you can get away with not ironing some items at all! If the item isn't too wrinkled you can just hang it up and use the steam feature to "virtually iron" the garment. Because the iron heats up so fast it's much better than using a traditional steamer, most of which take a long time to start producing steam.I hope this video gives you a better idea of what the iron looks like and some of the features. You can see that it's pretty simple but actually a nice improvement over the old fashioned irons. Since using this iron I'm actually looking at 100% cotton and linen clothing again!Update 12/20/12 - Still using this iron and loving it. It's worked perfectly since day one.

A limited use, expensive, iron.....

I was hopeful for this iron, given its unique design and wireless ability. Years ago I had another wireless iron that was bulky, time consuming, and required constant re-charging. Unfortunately, this time around my experience is the same. This iron is receiving a number of reviews in men's magazines as an iron that even men can appreciate, but that's not been my experience. The iron simply does not get hot enough for long enough to do anything but light ironing, forget about ironing the cotton shirt or jeans unless you have 30 minutes to spare per item while struggling with recharging the iron in order to achieve what can only be called intermittent steam. The design and the light weight and the integration of the cord and carrying handle are all terrific, but ultimately even an inexpensive iron at half this cost will deliver better results. However, if you iron, like, one or two shirts a week and want something that looks really cool and don't mind spending the money, then this might be the iron for you. If you want a workhorse because you do the ironing in the family, this is not the iron to buy.

Amazing what some steam can do!

There has been this stain on my vinyl floor for the last several years. No amount of mopping, scrubbing or chemicals have been able to get it completely removed. To this day I still have no idea where this stubborn stain had come from. After receiving this product I thought, "If this can get that stupid stain out, I'll give it a 5 star review." So to work I went.At first I used the extender attachment on the floor (along with the cleaner that came with the product), set it to high clean, blasted it for several minutes, wiped it with a rag and the stain didn't budge. I was about to call it quits but for the sake of the review I thought, "What the heck... I'll give the small plastic brush attachment a shot" but had little expectation after that. The plastic (not metal) brush in conjunction with the steam removed the stain with just a little elbow grease. I was floored (hehe)! I no longer have to hide the stain with an awkwardly placed appliance. Also shocking, my vinyl floor has a ton of grooves and pits by design and all of the darker ridges I thought were part of the design was actually dirt that had gotten deep into the vinyl! When I stopped cleaning my stain area I realized how gross the rest of the floor was by comparison. I mop and sweep regularly!!!After that I started seeking out things in the house that needed a good scrubbing. First up was the refrigerator door handle. I have a white fridge with a plastic textured handle that has turned gray from grubby kid hands. It only took seconds for the grossness to melt away as opposed to the other times I have cleaned it and scrubbed for several minutes. I was starting to wish I had kept the old nasty shower door from the bathroom before the remodel. I am super curious to hear how this performs on showers from others' experiences. The only reason we didn't put a shower door in the bathroom post-remodel is because it was ridiculous to keep clean.So why four-stars after my promise of a five-star review if Hoover could remove my stain? Well.... I used it on a HOT day and was wearing shorts and was barefoot... yeah... I know... but between the heat and the steam I wasn't putting on long pants to test a product that I didn't believe would actually work. I also moved my precious works of art from the fridge to the nearby kitchen table. I removed one star for the amount of sputtering which hit my legs/feet and ended up on my Picassos. I did NOT receive burns and there was no major damage to my child's artwork, however, I think there should definitely be less sputtering and the Hoover should be able to maintain a steady flow of steam instead of steam/spray/sputter/steam. I would recommend pants or other protective clothing in case your skin is more sensitive then mine and be sure to move items away from the surrounding area where you will be working. Also, all the sputtering just makes water pool up on the floor unnecessarily, wastes the water/cleaning solution, and makes the steamer less effective.I have posted my before and after stain photos under "Product Images" if anyone is interested. I highly recommended this product to save time and energy getting out those tough stains/messes that seem to melt away with this product.

In hand the unit feels no heavier and is no larger than a pitcher of water half full. Not difficult by any means to carry around and use, but at the same time is quality made. One can tell that every attention to detail has been addressed when they were making this.Each attachment locks into place securely, but is also simple enough to figure out how to put together with out instruction. It comes with a wonderful selection of brushes and tools, one for every cleaning job you can think of. The hose attachments have 2 reusable cloth pads for each attachment (total of 4). So even if you have one being washed in the laundry, you have a second one that can still be used. The bristles on the brushes are a mix of ones made of firm nylon some with wire bristles.The unit itself is extremely easy to operate. The on/off button is on the side near the bottom. A blue light indicates when it's turned on and another light indicates when the steam is ready. There is a not near the top which allows you to adjust the amount (if any is used) of cleaner that is mixed in with the steam. The steam is released by pressing down on a lever on the handle. The nob on the top of the unit is for opening and closing the area where you pour in the water. This nob has a rubber texture to it so one can easily grip it even if their hands are wet. The option use cleaning solution is poured into a small reservoir located at the bottom of the handle.I am beyond thrilled with the performance of this steam cleaner. I am able to steam out dirt that has wedged itself in the seams of our floors between the flooring and kitchen cabinets. I am able to get the black stuff cleaned out from the inside of window frames, clean out the sticky stuff that collects under the microwave and refrigerator, remove the mold from crevices in the bathtub and steam away the yuck that you can't see from around faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms.No matter how clean it seems you are able to get something with paper towels and spray cleaners, you will be shocked how much more dirt/grease/mold/etc its removed when you use a steam cleaner afterwards.This unit gets very hot and packs a lot of steam for being compact and handheld. It's easy to use and even comes with a Hoover tote bag for keeping your steamer safe and the accessories all together. Sleek looking and built for results, I high recommend this Hoover Enhanced Clean Steam Cleaner if you looking for stellar results and working within a budget.

Good for a handheld steamer; couple of irritating quirks however

I've been using steam cleaners for several years, both hand-held and canister. While I generally prefer canister models, this is one of the few handheld models I've tried that actually performs well.Hoover offers a unique feature in that there's a dispensing system so you can add a Hoover-brand disinfectant cleaner (as expected, the user's manual states that no other brand other than Hoover cleaners can be used). There's a control knob that meters out how much cleaner is dispensed. Granted, this feature is the opposite of why some people use steam cleaners -- the ability to clean WITHOUT using chemicals. But, using the chemical is optional, and the unit will function just fine as a plain steamer.There are several pros to this model:> Temperature is the best of any handheld unit I've tried: consistently 150 to 160 F at the tip without any attachments; 125 to 130 at the tip when using the extension hose. Pretty good for such a little guy!> Lots of attachments are provided for many different tasks. The attachments attach and remove easily and securely. I especially like that the brushes snap in using a retaining system that does not rely on O-rings (which usually fail pretty quickly).> Has an on/off button so you can turn it off without having to pull the plug.> Very quiet (especially compared with some canister units that you need ear plugs to use).> Fast to heat up (few minutes).> Comes with a storage bag (sort of a large tote bag) to hold the many bits and pieces. The bag quality is only so-so, but just having one is a nice touch.> Extra long power cord with a Velcro tie to keep it organized in storage.> Steam is pretty dry, although not dry enough for this to be useful as a means to kill bedbugs or clean mattresses. Best of all is that there is virtually no condensation in the hose between uses. Normally, low-end steam cleaners release a splat of water when you let them sit a few minutes between uses. Not so with this model.Down sides and quirks are:> The included nylon brushes are very soft and deform easily under heat. After less than 2 hours of use one is already getting pretty worn. Since brushes are a critical component to any steam cleaner, Hoover should have included more of them as well as include stiffer nylon brushes that last longer and are good on grout.> The steam trigger switch does not have a lock, so you must keep it depressed to use. While I can see the safety reasons behind this, it makes using this a two-handed operation most of the time. Very annoying! I've used other handheld steamers that had a trigger lock and I've never had any safety issues. Still have all 10 fingers and no burns!> While the steam temperature is excellent, the steam pressure is anemic. This is a mixed blessing in that low pressure is good for some tasks (cleaning walls, cleaning in enclosed areas such as microwaves, etc.) but higher pressure is much more effective for other tasks since the pressure, in combination with the steam, blasts out the crud hiding in the corners (such as stoves, around faucets, grills, etc.). It's common to have a pressure regulator so you can dial the pressure up and down. This model does not have it - you only get low pressure. I'm guessing that's due to the fact that low pressure is best when using the dispensing system.> You need to be careful not to cross thread the knob when putting it on after filling up the unit with water. A beefier knob would be better.In conclusion: if you're looking for a hand held unit, this should certainly be on your short list. A bit pricy for a hand held, but a lot of features.General musings on steam cleaners:Should you get a hand held or a canister? Hand helds are good for quick cleaning jobs, are easy to store, and heat up fast. For example, I can get my stove top cleaned with a hand held steamer in the time it takes most canisters to warm up. But, they suffer from lower power, less water capacity, and the inability to do floors.So, unless you really are pressed for storage space, a cannister will give you more bang for the buck. In the under-100 dollar category good canister models are made by Wager, McColloch (sp?) and Steamfast. My favorite is the Euroflex Monster canister which is no longer made, but can occasionally be found at places such as Sam's Club.Keep in mind that the under $100 dollar price point will not get you a lot when it comes to steam cleaners. Nice units are in the several hundred range, and can easily top $1500. Moving up the price ladder gets you hotter steam, higher pressure, better build quality, and features such as dual tanks so you can refill without having to let the unit cool down.
