Steams well, but a few minor gripes

When this arrived I had clothes that I'd left in the dryer for three days in preparation for testing this steamer. (Or... um... I forgot about them.) I pulled a wrinkled lump of clothes out of the dryer and into a laundry basket, and sat down to assemble the steamer.Assembly was very easy, and didn't require the directions. I extended the pole, removed the thumb screw from the base, dropped the pole into place and put the screw in to hold it there. I pushed the hanger onto the top of the pole, and I was done.I did check the directions for water recommendations, and that's a good thing. The directions warn you not to use water with additives or softeners, and they say you must use tap water. If you live in an area like mine, with hard well water, Rowenta recommends using half tap water and half distilled water. I used ordinary bottled drinking water, and here's my first gripe: while the tank is probably very easy to fill if you're holding it under the tap, if you're in a hard water area and must fill it from a bottle, the way the tank is tilted makes it tricky to fill without spilling. It's also impossible to see the max fill line while pouring. It's not a problem everyone will have and it's not a big deal, but it is an annoyance.I hung the steam head from the hanger, as the instructions describe, and plugged the steamer in and turned it on. All the lights dimmed significantly and remained dimmed. This clearly draws quite a lot of power. (The directions warn "To avoid a circuit overload, do not operate another high-wattage appliance on the same circuit.") About a minute later, I had steam.Here's where I ran into my second annoyance: the steam head hook is in the middle of the hanger. That means that the steam head is attached to the hanger when you're not holding it, so moving clothes on and off the hanger is a challenge. After trying to find a way to make it work, I gave up on the built-in hanger and just put clothes on my own hangers, then hung those on the built-in hanger. Not a big deal, but it's easy to knock clothes off the hanger and onto the floor, getting them nicely wrinkled again. I also lost the height advantage that way, and had to drag a chair over to steam the bottom of the clothes, near the floor.The built-in hanger doesn't rotate, but if you're using your own hangers it's easy to turn clothes around that way.The hose is a bit stiff and difficult to work with, but it loosens up quite a bit as the steam flows through it. It seems durable and will probably last a long time, so I'm not complaining about this.The steamer produces a good amount of steam, yet a partial fill was more than enough to get through a very large load of terribly wrinkled clothes. Deep wrinkles fell out easily with a couple of swipes of the steam head. Collars and pocket flaps that had been crinkled for a long time relaxed and lay flat after a few seconds of steady steam application--even my iron doesn't work that well on problems like that.I haven't tried the fabric brush. I only had one item that might have needed it--a very battered pair of cargo pants--and the steam alone did a pretty good job on those. I wasn't about to turn the steamer off, wait for it to cool, attach the fabric brush, then heat it up again to do one pair of pants. Because the brush pops off easily, next time I'm going to start with the brush attached, steam the clothes that might need brushing first, then take the brush off and continue.I also haven't tried the crease attachment. My uniform days are over, as are my days of ironing in creases. It attaches to the steam head and the clothes slip in between the crease attachment and the steam head. It looks like it might be tricky, but it should do well refreshing the crease on items that are already creased.The lint pad, which does not attach to the steamer, does a great job. It seems to work better when the clothes are resting on a flat surface, rather than hanging on a hanger. It's also very easy to clean.All these attachments are great, but there's no way to store them with the steamer. You can attach the brush or crease attachment to the steam head, but that leaves another attachment and the lint tool with no home. I've thrown them into a plastic bag that I hang from the hanger.The power cord isn't very long. It's good if you plan to stay in one place and steam laundry, but if you plan to move it around to steam curtains, you might want to have an extension cord on hand. The instructions warn that a 15 amp extension cord should be used to avoid overheating.While the problems like the built-in hanger/steam head hook make this steamer a little difficult to use, it really does a great job steaming. Very wrinkled clothes came out far better than I expected. It heated up quickly, and is nice and compact to store, aside from the hanger. It's got some annoyances, but in the end it does the job well.

This Product needs a lot of uprading.

It's a Rowenta, making me believe it would be a high quality product.So far after using it for 3 weeks on about 25 garments, I find myself liking this steamer less and less.First of all the hose and handle quickly get so hot I cannot hang on to them after about 10 minutes without wearing a glove.Second the cord for the unit is way to light for the amount of electricity going to the unit. I have to stop at around 20 minutes and let the cord cool off. It should have a heavier cord with the 3 prongs instead of 2.Trying to hang a garment over the top of the hanging unit, as in using it like a clothes hanger proves crazy when you need to remove the garment. I have to find someplace to lay down the steam hose and then remove my garment from the hanger, it cannot be done easily with one hand.It does produce hotter steam then other 1500 watt steamer I have used. After being on for a minute or 2 I get really hot,hot,hot, steam. The unit uses more water (about double) My 2 year old steamer, of course, because I am getting much hotter steam and more of it.The cord is much longer than on my old steamer. Overall I am pretty disappointed with this steamer. Even though it can put out the heat required to do the job, I can barely endure the heat and lack of ease for the user this steamer needs to back to the drawing board.

Almost Like Magic!

The Rowenta IS6200 Full Size Garment Steamer is really easy to put together out of the box, really easy to use, and makes the wrinkles fall out of most garments like magic! Now there's no excuse for me to walk around looking as though I dressed out of the hamper! I use this on just about anything that I've left in the clothes basket too long, including my husband's scrubs, which can look sloppy if they're not pressed, or at least tended to right out of the dryer. While this steamer doesn't get them looking meticulously iron-pressed, it gets them looking pretty darned sharp. There's a pleat attachment you can use, to make pleats extra-sharp with the steamer, and it works really well. You can use that same attachment to put the crease down the front of pants. I just don't live in a world where I need creases down the front of my pants.This steamer works really, really well on ruffles. Ruffles and ruching and gathers seem to be the thing right now, and with an iron, they're tricky, unless you really know what you're doing. You can wind up with unintentional iron-creases where soft ruffles should be. And you can use the steamer on more delicate knits than you'd want to use an iron on.The Rowenta steamer features a place to hang your garment, an integrated hanger hook if you choose to steam your garment right on its hanger, and clips for your pants and skirts or anything that's too small to go on a hanger well for steaming (in my case, I steam my daughter's baby clothes- works great!)The steam head hooks right onto the top of the steamer to get it out of the way while you're switching garments on the steamer, but it's important to note that as long as the steamer's on, it's letting steam out. What I mean is there isn't a button or anything on the steamer to let you push it and get steam or get more steam out. It just lets out a gentle stream of steam on its own. On this model, there's a nice, big on/off switch that you can gently step on with your foot.When you're done, you can collapse the steamer down into a short little thing that rolls out of sight.I really like this steamer. It works so well that laundry day is almost fun!

Poor Looks; Outstanding Craftsmanship

I'll make it simple: If you are looking for a home-edition garment steamer, your top 2 choices in the marketplace will likely be the Jiffy 2000 and the Rowenta 8100.I tested both for 10 hours; on a 1 to 10 scale:Jiffy (Looks = 6; Engineering = 10; Handling = 9; Craftsmanship = 10).It looks like a mop bucket on wheels but it performs like a jet engine; every part of this machine from the plate at the bottom of the unit to the steam handle is built for rugged usage.Rowenta (Looks = 10; Engineering = 5; Handling = 7; Crafsmanship = 4).It looks like a UFO but performs like a Pinto with much less steaming power; it is built as a toddler's toy having most parts made with inexpensive plastic including the watertank base and valve: pull the machine a single foot OR tilt it a mere 1 inch and you will experience a slow-building cascade.Buy the Rowenta 8100 as a decorative piece to make your closet look good.Buy the Jiffy 2000 as a garment steamer to make your clothes look good.

Worthwhile Purchase

After figuring out that I must be spending in excess of $1000 yearly to have my husband's oxford shirts cleaned and pressed, I decided to cut my losses and purchase a Jiffy steamer.I am happy with the purchase, so much so that I routinely steam garments that I would not have ironed in the past (t-shirts especially come out looking store-bought new), and it takes very little time.I have used the steamer on prom dresses with great success.I am able to press a knife-edged crease in dress pants of all types of material.I think the best thing about this appliance is that I feel I am damaging our clothing LESS than if I were using an iron.Don't throw away your iron, however! I must still use it to finish off the collars and shoulders of my husband's work shirts.

Great purchase

After borrowing a friend's ConAir steamer, and reading numerous reviews, I purchased this Jiffy from Amazon about a month ago. The Jiffy seems to be better-built than the ConAir, and puts out more steam, more consistantly than the model I borrowed.In the last month, I have steamed everything I can think of in my house, to see how it works. I have been pleased with this product, and here is what I have learned:1) A steamer is not an iron. While I have read reviews of how you can press creases into clothing, I have not been successful in this (yet). I don't really care about creases, though, and have not spent much time trying.2) A steamer is a tool. You have to learn how to use it properly to get good results. Steaming from underneath works better than steaming downward into the right side of the fabric. Just like anyone who uses a hammer a few times is almost certainly going to hammer their finger, you will probably burn yourself while you are learning to use a steamer. When I first started using the steamer, I wanted to steam upwards, like I iron. It was counter-inuitive for me, but it works better to steam downwards.3) Wrinkles really do fall out of fabrics, but this seems to only happen with synthetic fibers or blends with a high percentage of synthetics. If I had trouble ironing it, it will take some work to steam it. However, I always iron in more wrinkles than I take out, so for natural or difficult fabrics, I do a better job with a steamer. Fabrics that I was afraid to iron (too thin/delicate) steam beautifully.Now, about the Jiffy J-2000 specifically:This steamer heats up very quickly, in just two or three minutes. I like to turn it on while I decide what to wear, and by the time I get it all together, it is ready to use. The wattage (1300) is slightly higher than most personal steamer models and makes a big difference in how quickly you can finish a garment.The steamer is very sturdily built. It uses heavy-duty plastics, and comes with a wrench (magnetically attached underneath the steamer body) to secure the parts tightly. The pole that holds the steamer head and clothing is shorter than I would personally like (and the hose is a little shorter, too) and stands about 5 feet. I could not steam all the way to the top of my curtains, while they were mounted to the wall. The water reservoir does not leak, although when you pull it out, some water does remain in the connection area, but not enough to make a mess.The list price on amazon for the steamer was 169.99, quite a deal more than most of the other steamers listed on Amazon. I purchased mine with a special 25$ off through Amazon, so paid 145$. I think that it is worth that price. I would not pay this much for the ConAir model that I borrowed. In a year, I may think the Jiffy is worth the Amazon list price.

Great little steamer

I have never used a steamer before, and I found this device surprisingly easy to use. The instructions were straight forward and the device assembled in a matter of minutes. I was impressed with how sturdy it appears to be. With this device you get a steamer, a stand, hanger, and manual.THE TEST:To give the steamer a complete workout I steamed 3 items. The first was an old suit of my fathers. After filling the steamer's reservoir I waited the required 45 seconds and went at it. I am not a professional drycleaner, so it took a while to figure it out. A slow steady stroke is best. I also found it useful to put a tea towel over my other hand in case I got a bit too close to it with the steamer since... Yowch, you CAN burn yourself if you aren't careful and steam is hot.I found the stand really was able to hold the suit well, and the steamer was able to tackle the job of my father's ancient suit nicely, straightening it.Next came my sister's cotton blazer. It was wrinkled, so I ran the steamer over the lapel area and down the backside and the steamer did a nice job.Final test: the curtains. Our curtains had been in storage and and after we hung them, there were a few unseemly folds. So I put the steamer on a stand, and steamed away. It took out the wrinkles nicely, and I didn't even have to take them down! AFFORDABLE Steaming Option--Great for Quick Jobs

Frankly, I was surprised this tiny steamer performs as well as it does.Ordinarily, I use a $200 Rowenta steam generator (similar to this Rowenta DG8030 Expert Steam Generator) to "iron" our clothes, and I wondered how well the SteamFast could compare. I'm happy to say, quite favorably. It actually has a few features that recommend it over the Rowenta, not the least of which is PRICE. Other benefits are convenience and warm-up time. When I use the Rowenta model, I have to use (and set up) an ironing board, dragging it from one end of the house to the other. It also takes about 5-7 minutes to warm up and start generating steam.The SteamFast, on the other hand, is self-contained; no ironing board is needed. Steaming is done simply by hanging garments on the steamer itself. It also heats up and is ready to use, just as the instructions say, in just 45 SECONDS. Super fast--I was really surprised! I also like its tiny footprint for storage; the telescoping pole can be retracted quickly, the hanger "folds in half" for storage, and the whole unit is lightweight and easy to handle (it even has wheels).Here are a couple of tips I've used to get the best performance out of the SteamFast:1. Use distilled water.2. Hang the garment, then start steaming at the BOTTOM and work your way upward. Starting at the bottom lets steam start penetrating and softening the whole garment as soon as you start steaming. Stop periodically to smooth out wrinkles with your hand (this greatly speeds the process).3. I'm sure the manufacturer doesn't recommend this, but I've found it quicker and easier to simply steam garments on their own hangers (I have plastic-coated hangers--metal would be a bad idea, because of the rusting/staining issue). If you choose to do this, you have to be REALLY careful to not burn yourself with rising steam.4. I've found the steamer works best by NOT using the brush attachment on the steamer head. Pay attention to the angle you hold the steamer head at; you'll quickly learn what angle works best for each type of fabric.All in all, this steamer does a good job and is an improvement (in my opinion) over a standard iron. You will, however, have to steam both the front and back of garments to get a suitable finish.My favorite features are the incredibly fast warm-up time and the fact that it has such a small footprint that it could even be used in a utility room. The cord is relatively short, so you'll need to work within about 6 feet of a power outlet.I've found that I like to use my SteamFast most for individual loads of laundry. I can go from dryer to steamer to closet in no time, rather than accumulating a worthy stack of ironables, like I used to do with the Rowenta, and then spend a couple of hours steaming. In other words, this little unit makes it easy to steam your clothes during your regular laundering process.This is a great value for its price; recommended!

Decent steamer for the size!

I just bought this a few weeks ago and couldn't wait to try it! Here's the rundown after having it for a few weeks:Pros:- It heats up pretty fast, maybe a minute?- Easy to put together.- Easy to refill water tank.- Does a decent job steaming clothes for the size of the steamer.- Comes with it's own stable hanger.Cons:- Still doesn't get out wrinkles completely in heavily wrinkled and heavier weight fabrics (like khakis).- The hanger is kind of large. Fits my husbands shirts fine since he has mostly L and XL size shirts, but I feel like I have to stretch my shirts/sweaters a little to get it on the hanger. For pants, I just hang a pants hanger (one with two clips) from the other hanger, otherwise, I'm not sure how you'd hang a pair of pants to steam it?- Sometimes if I've been using it a long time and while I'm steaming, drops of hot water/collected steam flick back on to me. Be careful!Overall, I'm happy with it. It's easier and quicker to use than my iron. I read another review where someone had said they wish there were more options, like a "Hold" button, and I would definitely agree with it! But, I got it for a good price, so I can't complain about the limited functionality.

Gets The Job Done

First I bought the more expensive Shark steamer; bad choice - it's way too heavy to hold for any length of time and it does take a long time to heat and really doesn't get wrinkles out. This Conair steamer is absolutely everything that Shark isn't. It's easy to handle, not heavy, gets hot right away - really hot. Has two settings - low and high heat; both work great for levis or silk blouses. I recommend this steamer very highly. One of the best purchases I have made in awhile.

Got mine today and couldn't wait to test it out. Filled with distilled water to about 1/2" under the "max fill" mark. Took around a minute for water to boil. I gotta admit, it's a little scary at first to be toting around this container of furiously boiling water.Tried it first on an old cotton shirt that I had already stuffed into a corner of the closet, to wrinkle it on purpose. It took a while, and I got the shirt "relaxed" but not "smooth". Aside from a very occasional drop (which evaporated away on the next pass), I didn't have any issues with it spitting hot water.Next test: a wool blazer, now that I wasn't concerned about spraying boiling water all over it. I used the lint brush attachment, and hey! This thing actually works! It helped to pull the garment taut while steaming. Watch those fingers... I think I saw somebody recommend an using an oven mitt in a review somehere? Not a bad idea. Anyway, this was a success, and pretty easy to do.Third test: a linen blazer, using the brush attachment. Maybe chalk it up to practice, but it looked perfect in no time. Yay!In summation: I'm still going to iron shirts that need it, but goodbye drycleaning. It half paid for itself in just a couple of uses. The power cord is nice and long. I don't like that there's no steam trigger, or even an on/off switch... once you plug it in, it's on and steaming. Plus, it leaves garments steam-damp, and you need to let them hang out for 30 minutes or so to dry completely. But overall, it works as promised and saves me money. I'm satisfied withn the purchase and would recommend it to a friend. Hope this helps.

Great Little Steamer!

I don't understand the negative reviews as this is a great little steamer and I've had it for years. I could only find it online and purchased one for both my Mother and my Aunt. The trick is using distilled water (to prevent buildup) and not overfilling. I don't ever fill it even to the maximum level. That's when you have spilling and spurting onto your clothes. If you expect it to work like an iron, it won't. And it works better on some materials than others. But if you're looking for a great way to freshen clothes and cut back on dry cleaning bills, this is it! I don't iron, so I use this for everything except my cotton work shirts, which I have dry cleaned.

Quick and easy - good value for the money

When I was a visual merchandiser for a retail store, I used a professional steamer nearly every day. I purchased this steamer based on price and user reviews. So far it has lived up to my expectations. It heats up quickly and I can get several garments done before I run out of water. Besides being lighter and made of plastic, it performs very similarly to professional grade (which cost 4 times as much). Two minor problems I have with this steamer - there are no brakes on the wheels so the steamer slides around while I'm steaming, and the telescoping pole isn't quite high enough for my taste. Most of the time I hang my garment on something else. Like with any steamer, it takes a little practice to really get good at it. A pointer for those new to steaming - place the steamer head on the inside of your garment pushing steam from inside to out. It's easier for you to handle everything that way (rather than steaming from the outside of the garment). Plus, I save a lot of steam burns by working this way!

I did a lot of research before buying this one. The other price points (unless the super professional grades) don't add much more feature, more like a bigger water tank. 45 minutes of steam is enough for me, as my arm was sore after 30 minutes or less. :(Pros: steams up really fast (< 1min), no drips. works well. The trick is to sweep the wand *SLOWLY*, instead of rapid back-and-forth motion. And I find that putting the wand with the brush INSIDE the shirt, and pulling it out & upwards gives you more tension in the fabric and thus makes it smoother and crispier, more than just taking the wrinkles out if you just do it from the outside. Heavier cotton requires more work.Cons: The pole is still too short (but others are of same height). So for longer clothing, you have to stoop down to get to the bottom hem. The pole is steady, just wobbles slight from all the tugging, but that doesn't bothers me. The problem is the hanger will wobble and twist a whole lot more and thus making steaming process a bit harder.Caveats: some wrinkles may return if you don't do enough(same with using the iron). And also, the clothes can wrinkle when slightly damp from the steaming. So hang them carefully afterwards.Overall I like it much better than an iron, and much safer. You may still get slight burn from the steam if not careful, but nowhere close to touching a hot piece of iron. All this is just from my first use after reading all the tips in other reviews. I can only get better with practice. Highly recommend!EDIT: This portion is an update after one year of use. The steamer had clogged up a few times (no steam coming out after 1-2 minutes). It turns out, there was mineral build-up from my using regular tap water (vs distilled water). I had to give it a thorough clean & rinse thru to get all the yucky brown & black residues out. Make sure to flush out all the mineral deposits. I also recommend that you empty out all the water if you don't plan on using it for days. Not just the tank, but where the water pools at the bottom of the unit. Keep it dry if not in use.

It takes the wrinkles out of everything from jeans, to silks and mens shirts too! We no longer need to send our shirts to the cleaners. The tank is easy to fill just lift off of the bottom (it's instantly detachable) and unscrew the top to pour water. I've never had to go back to using a iron and ironing board. YAY! It will change your life and is just as professional as department store steamers.
